Rock Steady Lexington is proud to partner with Hits Boxing Club and Fitness

to bring a new, exciting form of Parkinson’s therapy to the Lexington area. Rock Steady is a non-profit, non-combat boxing regime designed for those living with Parkinson’s that aims to improve quality of life, physical health, and develop camaraderie among its participants.

Program Basis

The basis of this program is using boxing to give those with PD a fighting chance. Any physician, for any reason, will recommend you exercise! Working up a sweat and meeting your personal goals is a fundamental part of any healthy lifestyle.

Boxing Delivers

The largest clinical study of Parkinson’s ever conducted—the Parkinson’s Outcomes Project, conducted by the Parkinson’s Foundation—gave special consideration to boxing in particular, as a form of treatment.

Benefits of Boxing

From decreasing bradykinesia to gaining strength and managing depression, exercise is a holistic treatment with benefits that begin in the short term and extend to the long term. Boxing is no exception. In fact, it may be even more beneficial. More and more research shows that boxing in particular has a profound effect on the physical and mental well being of people living with PD

Multiple Studies

Improvements in balance, mobility, and gait are only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to what boxing can do for those with Parkinsons. Multiple studies report that those with PD who take up boxing experience an increase in quality of life, better results on a number of physical tests such as the Berg Balance Test and the Functional Reach Test, and improved multi directional movement.

The great strength of boxing

is that it combines many different forms of exercise—it requires the same strength, balance, and aerobic skills that forms like dancing, strength training, and calisthenics in an even more engaging activity.

On top of this

boxing is a goal-based exercise that combines skill and cognitive engagement. Both of these factors help promote neuroplasticity and benefits at the synaptic level. In short, boxing is more than a physical workout, but a mental one too. .

At the same time as

it treats motor symptoms, boxing has also been found to create a stronger sense of self in those with PD. It doesn’t hurt to feel like a champion!
